Originating from the Szechuan province of China, Szechuan pepper is associated with dishes from that region which feature hotter and spicier cooking than the rest of China. It is a common spice in Asia and is one of the spices in five-spice powder. Szechuan peppercorns are used along with chili and garlic to flavour many regional spicy dishes including Dan Dan Noodles and Kung Pao Chicken.
